Review of Freddy's Silver Arts Award by Vicky

Review of Freddy’s Blog

By Vicky Roberts, Teacher.

Reading Freddy’s blog has been great fun. His relaxed style of writing makes you feel he is talking to you and explaining things as if you were there in front of him. The photos and use of sound bites enhanced the quality of the blog, really allowing the reader to gain a more rounded picture of what Freddy has achieved than words alone.

Freddy has included a high level of detail both about the technical aspects of what he has been learning in the studio and about how the songs he chose to perform took shape. These details could be useful to other students contemplating a similar project.

Freddy has also shown that he has completed a degree of research on the music of the different decades he has covered, which really pays dividends in the versions of the songs he has recorded as they have a very period authentic feel. My only criticism of this aspect of the project is that he has not included references of where he obtained his research. This is a huge research ‘no no’ as it amounts to plagiarism.
I found this format of reading a project slightly difficult in that I think some of the information Freddy has given would have been better placed in a different section of the blog. For instance, it was jarring for me to find the section on Gary Numan as a musical hero amongst Freddy’s 60s work. As a musical icon of the late 70s /early 80s I would have thought he would have been better placed in the blog after the Maggie May work. In the same vein I also found the gig review slightly odd in the middle of the 60s work as Motorhead are not a band of the 60s. I would also like to have seen Freddy’s project completed with his 80s song and a conclusion of what he feels he has achieved with this project.

Overall though I think Freddy has done a magnificent job with the blog and with enhancing his performance skills and studio skills. Knowing where he started from I am most impressed with how much he has achieved in a relatively short time frame and how he has matured during the process. His sense of enjoyment shines throughout the blog and I am so pleased that he has decided to continue his studies at Suffolk New College. He should be very proud of the work he has done with Noise Solution (and vice versa). Best of luck Freddy!

Reviewing plan and how it worked

Our plan was to spend 4 or 5 weeks on each track within the project. We had planned to do four tracks but because stuff took longer than we have expected it looks like we will only manage to get three done.

However we did manage to cover all our main goals that were needed to cover the Arts Award - the other time that we'd planned to do the fourth track in has been taken up with planning and delivering the leadership part of the arts award.

Week 27

hi there to all you music lovers and as you know over the weeks im teaching my mother the piano and cord structure so far this week we have looked at my mothers selected music piece which is Californiacation by the red hot chille peppers so far my summary is that she is picking up the chords very quickly and as a result of this it seems like the teaching is paying off.

firstly we looked at basic chords i.e. c,d,e,f,g,a,b soon after i started showing my mother how to convert a major such as the chords above into minors the formula for a basic chord is known as root 1,4,3 this is a position of the fingers a minors formula is known as 1,3,4. I had to teach minors because my mothers piece had minors in it, i soon realized that my music sheet of chords didn't help to start with because i could see my mother trying to play the chords on the sheet and not remember them to play so i turned the sheet over and we started from the top going from c chord up to b chord and down again i then said could you give me a minor an explained and taught the formula soon after we could play both major and minor .

Unexpectedly i read the chords of the music sheet without her knowing and she nailed it soon after i said "you've just completed the first verse of the song" her reaction was that she couldn't believe it soon after we then we looked at reading chords and learning to find them on the piano. all in all the day was another success and i thought that everything i taught got through which made me feel great and proud of my mother for achieving.

Really enjoyed my first lesson on chord structures, have got the hang of the basics and now want to learn more!, my tutor taught me well and came up with some good ideas of ways to memorise my learning.

By Simon on Week 16 on 12/01/11

Hi Freddy that sounds good man - I really like your voice all in tune, piano sounds sick man, keep up the good work and doin your thing

Great organ playing on 'The House Of The Rising Sun'Freddy and the sound you created is very 'Animal-esque'. It's great to see you have been learning alot and still having fun. The Motorhead gig looked awesome! Looking forward to hearing 'Maggie May' when that is finished. I'm not sure it would be wise to attempt Rod Stewart's style of vocals though or you may end up with a sore throat! Just make it your own! Just a tiny teachery comment. Remember capital letters after full stops! Take care, Vicky.

Hi Freddy,

I've listened to your 'Hound Dog' track and thought it was excellent. It sounded really authentically '50s and I was amazed by your vocals. I'm so pleased that your project is going well and you seem to be thoroughly enjoying it.

Can't wait to hear the next track!

Fantastic Freddy - really good work!
By Simon on Week 5-recording the vocals on 12/10/10

Hi Freddy

Simon played me the track with the vocals on it the other evening. I was amazed! I didn't realize that you were going to do the singing too and Si says you weren't always a singer. It sounds brilliant, well done!

By Belinda Bell on Week 4 - tidying up backing track on 11/10/10

HI Freddy, I had lots of fun learning how to play Hound Dog in the studio today it's a really fun Rock'n'Roll piece to play. Before Our next session in the studio I'd like you to write about the session today and what you learnt from it. I'd also like you to find some information about recording technics in the 50's. What's really important is that having read about recording you blog about what you've learnt and how it effects what and how we record our peice. What limitations will it impose? Post links to the information you find or pictures. Look forward to next week. Oh and practice the piece and remember your memory stick!

Regards

Simon

Week 26 Future Plans

Hi there to all who wants to know where Im going from here after my Noise solution project well if you don't know I am trying to get into Suffolk new collage and I've done my interview which went really well and the qualification which I am hoping to take is a media BTEC level 2 diploma ill put the hyperlink to the page in below in this it will teach me more about the arts which im interested in and to hope, one day id like to teach the subject to youngsters or people who are willing to get into media and music the course will cover various different subjects such as photography, Radio broadcastment which im involved in at the moment, TV advertisement and much more.

It's a one year course and if I chose to do the next level whether I can stay in that is is up to me or the collage to decide. At the moment Lapwing who are my learning contractors who have helped me get the qualifications I need for collage have asked for me to teach another student who wants to carry on the Radio show I set up originally at Ipswich Community Radio for lapwing named: Lapwing Radio it did go out live at one point and will hopefully carry on when I teach this new student how to become a top presenter of ICR: I will leave the link to the web page below.

Ipswich Community Radio Logo
Radio presenting is an art in media and has always been a passion of mine due to the fact that I don't stop talking and talking is a talent in this world for which Radio Broadcasting thrives on. This for me was my first entry into the public arts as I appeared as a special guest on a pre-recorded radio show the name of the show is forgotten to me now since its been sometime since I got into it but from there I was very keen and pushed my out and about volunteer into becoming a radio DJ so I could soon one day become a presenter my self which I have successfully done and as you can see I started a radio show up for my contractors and Im planning on teaching the art someday to young eccentric presenters like my self who can keep the revolution of Radio broadcastment going.

Presenters @ Ipswich Community Radio
My first step will be to sign on up as a radio volunteer for ICR and from there id love to help and teach the art to those who wish to learn it. If push comes to shove id sign up with CSV and do it that way if possible (I will add CSV's link as well.)
Here's a couple of pics of me in the studio with Mark Rolfe the presenter for the Gamerz Show

week 26 delivering first leadership session

hi there to all who wish to read my blog for this weeks session today i had to do my other part of my silver arts award which was the leadership task where i set myself weeks to teach someone what i had learnt and the student which i so happened to be teaching was my mother and i felt that she understood everything i had taught her firstly i gave her a VIP tour of the studio and showed her the fire exits as well as covering health and safety.

Soon after we went onto learning the notes on the piano this was to make me understand wether or not she understood what the key notes of a piano were i.e. a,b,c,d,e,f,g after a bit of going over this subject she seemed to have understood clearly after 2-3 Min's of going over old grounds as my mother had been previously taught by a former teacher of mine soon after i knew she was confident in notes we soon moved on to chord structure understanding that starting on a c note using the counting formula 1.4.3 where you position your fingers in structure of the numbers counting upwards presents a cord.

After 30 Min's i started seeing real improvement i could see that my mother understood the cords very quickly after i had taught her the cords we took a brief look at majors and minors and then after all this i interviewed my mother about how she thought her session went if you want to hear the interview click below all in all i thought the session went well and i cant wait ill next week stay posted

Here is some video of me teaching and below that a recorded interview covering what my student thought and another covering what I thought of the lesson.
